The commercial radio world in Sweden had its little uproar and are not going to forget, much less forgive, my actions in November 2003 when I jammed commercial radio signals disrupting usual programming by blocking commercial signals for 5 minutes replacing it with my program that I ran through the university radio channel in Umeå.
Now it seems they found a loophole

I have a grant from the Swedish arts council to work on a video piece (image below is a part of this, animated by Sam Addo). Should be done early spring.
I could show this piece earlier in Vancouver (it is set to be exhibited in Sweden in May).

I don’t contribute with anything to this piece. It is the public who carries it with them. It’s about an involuntary participation where the reaction to the piece is much more important than the piece itself.
A piece where the spectator is potentially the subject of their own fears. it is that fear that is on display.
Most of our colds are caused by Rhinoviruses. The common conception has been that the main transmitter of Rhinoviruses was through touch, but clinical studies show that the primary culprit for contamination is extended exposure to indoor concentrations to airborne particles. They spread through invisible droplets in the air you breath. When you sneeze you send out between 3000 and 5000 droplets at up to 120 km/h reaching up to 10 meters. Rhinoviruses can stay alive as droplets in the air for as long as 3 hours.

Man har länge trott att den huvudsakliga smittospridningsorsaken varit kontakt via hand, mun, ögon och näsa, men kliniska studier visar att den primära smittospridningen sker via luftburna partiklar inomhus. Partiklarna sprids genom osynliga droppar som man andas i luften. När man nyser skickar man ut mellan 3000 och 5000 droppar med en hastighet på 120 kilometer i timmen och som kan nå upp till 10 meter. Rhinovirus kan överleva i luften i upp till tre timmar.

I tend to focus on the involuntary contribution by the audience who, potentially, become the object of their own fears. But I like this take on it by critic Bill Gusky.

Jag tenderar att fokusera på hur publiken som ser detta verk själva blir orsaken till sin egen rädsla eftersom det kan vara de som bär in viruset. Man jag gillar följande tolkning av kritiker Bill Gusky.
“I haven’t had time to digest this all, but my initial reaction is that this is one interesting agent. I’ll be getting back to it later, but maybe you’ll have some thoughts or reactions, or maybe you’re totally familiar with Mr. Cuzner’s work and will fill me in on the details.
The idea of detecting viruses in an art museum comes off as pretty funny to me, not having read any further into it. The viral nature of memes, and the capacity of visual art to transmit memes, all play into my initial reaction.
It’s funny to think that an art museum could be so ineffective, so wholly devoted to the obsolete, that one would need a special high-tech detector to tell if anything serious or substantial is going on there.
That’s my two cents; now I’ve got to run a few miles before a big Noreaster blows in.

Since Itziar Okariz will be urinating on a stage at an exhibition where I will be installing my virus detection system, (“Detecting airborne viruses at the opera”, see future entry at the end of the month) some questions have come in asking if I will be detecting viruses that are passed on via body fluids. The answer to that question is simply no. I will only be registering the airborne Rhinovirus (the common cold) and although the Rhinovirus can be passed on through body fluids it is much more likely that you catch it from the person standing next to you watching the same performance.
The reactions to Okariz’s work are astonishing and some people are trying to use my work to prove that it is not only disgusting but also dangerous. Some politicians are calling for a total boycott of the MADE festival and are getting strong consensus from the local population (in Umeå, Sweden).
Eftersom Itziar Okariz ska kissa på scen i samma byggnad där jag ska installera mitt virusspårningssystem (“Detecting airborne viruses at the opera”, se kommande inlägg mot slutat av månaden.) Har några frågor kommit till mig som undrar om jag spårar virus som förs över via kroppsvätskor, svaret är helt enkelt nej. Jag kommer bara att registrera det luftburna Rhinoviruset (världens vanligaste förkylningsvirus). Trots att Rhinoviruset kan föras över genom kroppsvätskor är det mycket mer troligt att du smittas av personen som står bredvid dig och tittar på samma föreställning.
Reaktionerna till Okariz verk är svindlande och några personer försöker använda mitt verk för att bevisa att det inte bara är motbjudande men också farligt. Några politiker uppmanar till full bojkott av MADE festivalen och de får starkt medhåll från befolkningen (i Umeå).
